At Share With A Counsellor, the therapists serving at the Share Centers qualify in any way to be called Counseling Psychologists. They have the relevant training from Degree level, Master and some up to PhD. They have all been registered and licensed by the Ministry of Health through the Board of Counsellors and Psychologists to practice in the Country. Some have specialization, and this is the criterion used to match clients and therapists.
All clients must complete the client intake form, which has the consent section and terms & conditions for therapy sessions. Within the client intake form, there is a section where the client picks from the provided drop-down list the presenting issue in general. This makes matching a suitable therapist and the client easy and convenient. This makes the client intake form a critical document while booking a session
A therapy session is a scheduled meeting between a client and a trained counsellor, psychologist, or therapist, where they talk in a safe and confidential space to work through personal challenges. A therapy session is like a guided conversation with a professional who helps you understand yourself better, manage stress, and find positive ways to handle life’s challenges. During a therapy session:
- The client shares their thoughts, feelings, or problems.
- The therapist listens carefully, asks guiding questions, and provides support.
- Together, they explore possible solutions, coping strategies, and healthier ways of thinking or behaving.
At the Share Centers, we provide different forms of therapy models depending on the needs of the client. The following are the three main therapy delivery points.
Individual Therapy
This is a one-on-one session between a client and a therapist to talk about personal challenges. Individual therapy is a personal conversation with a professional counsellor, with the intent of helping the client understand self better and work through challenges in a safe space. This interaction for one person and, taking place either in the Virtual or Physical Share Centres. In a safe space, the client works privately with a trained therapist to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and personal challenges.
The therapist’s role is to listen, guide, and use evidence-based techniques to help the individual achieve personal growth, healing, and healthier life choices. The therapeutic environment created in the two Share Centres provides a healing, confidential, and supportive space for the client to: understand and manage emotions, process difficult experiences (such as trauma, stress, grief, or conflict), develop coping skills and problem-solving strategies, and improve self-awareness, relationships, and overall well-being.
Other types of therapies conducted at the individual level include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - Helps people identify and change negative thinking patterns and behaviours.
- Psychodynamic Therapy - Explores past experiences and unconscious thoughts that may affect current behaviour.
- Humanistic/Person-Centered Therapy - Focuses on personal growth, self-awareness, and building self-esteem.
- Trauma Therapy - Helps clients heal from traumatic experiences (e.g., abuse, accidents, disasters).
- Play Therapy (for children) - Uses play and creative activities to help children’s express emotions and solve problems.
- Art and Drama Therapy - Uses creative expression as a way to process emotions and heal for children
Joint therapy session
A joint therapy session is when two or three people meet with a therapist together to talk through problems, share their concerns, goals, or relationship issues. It is often used in situations like Couples therapy/ marriage - Helps partners work through conflicts, improve understanding, and strengthen their relationship by working on their communication, trust, or conflict resolution. Joint therapy can be used to manage conflict between 2 peers, friends, or colleagues. This interaction is for 2-3 persons, taking place either in the Virtual or Physical Share Centres.
In a safe space, the clients work privately with a trained therapist to explore thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and challenges. During the joint session, the therapist helps participants: set rules of interaction, express their feelings openly in a safe and structured way, listen and understand each other’s perspectives, learn healthier ways of communicating and solving problems together, strengthen their relationship, and build mutual respect. The joint therapy session can also serve as a mediation, conflict resolution, and peace-promoting forum.
Group Therapy Session
A small group of people share experiences and support each other with guidance from a therapist. Group therapy is a form of therapy where 6–12 people meet with a trained therapist to share experiences, support one another, and learn coping skills in a safe, confidential space. It helps with stress, anxiety, depression, grief, addiction recovery, trauma, abuse, and relationship or social skills. An example of a group therapy is Family therapy- Focuses on improving communication and relationships within a family unit. It helps disgruntled members address misunderstandings, parenting challenges, or conflicts. Key features include: Shared experiences (realizing one is not alone); Support from both therapist and peers; Learning new perspectives; and Practicing communication and coping skills.
The therapist acts as a leader and supporter, guiding discussions, educating, observing, and ensuring safety. The group therapy can take place in a neutral space, like a community hall, hotel, church hall, or a partner's office. At our Physical Share Centre, we do not have a conducive space to host group therapy unless the number is less than five. The group therapy session can also serve as a mediation, conflict resolution, and peace-promoting forum, community engagement, stakeholder need identification, or support group.
The Counselling and Psychologist Profession recommends a minimum of 5 therapy sessions per issue presented by a client or group. However, during the 1st session, the client is allowed a safe space to share personal concerns and issues, and together with the therapist, a treatment plan is developed that guides the initial 4 sessions.
In case the issues are complex and disconnected from the initial purpose of the therapy session, the client, with the consent of the financier, can still have more sessions. The therapist maintains constant monitoring to protect the client from forming dependency on therapy.
There are therapy issues that require a minimum of 10 therapy sessions for a start, such include addiction recovery therapy or terminal illness management counselling, among others. The client is informed at inception about the possible number of sessions to achieve the best outcome.
- Standard session intervals - The profession recommends a 7-day interval between sessions and the next. Therapy is often scheduled with about 7-day (weekly) intervals, which give clients time to absorb therapy, apply what they learn, and come back ready for the next stage of healing. Here are some important reasons for the 7-day interval at the Center.
- Time to process and practice - After a session, clients need time to reflect on what was discussed and practice new coping strategies or assignments in real life before the next meeting.
- Balance between support and independence - Weekly sessions provide enough regular support without making the client overly dependent on the therapist. It keeps continuity but also encourages self-growth.
- Consistency for progress - Meeting weekly helps maintain momentum and builds trust in the therapeutic relationship. Long gaps may slow down progress, while too frequent sessions may feel overwhelming.
- Emotional regulation - Therapy can bring up deep emotions. A week allows time to settle, regulate feelings, and return prepared for the next step.
- Practical scheduling - A weekly rhythm is manageable for most clients and therapists, making it easier to sustain therapy over time.
Short Intervals of Therapy Sessions
There is a situation that forces the session duration to change. Extra support helps the client feel safe and prevents them from becoming overwhelmed between sessions. Sometimes a therapist may recommend shorter intervals (every 2–3 days / multiple times a week) to provide extra support to a needy client. This unique situation is common to clients who are going through a crisis or acute distress like severe anxiety, trauma, grief, or suicidal thoughts. Students referred for counselling sometimes have a short duration for recommended therapy sessions.
In some cases, the early stages of therapy when strong support and stabilization are needed, some clients may require shorter intervals of therapy sessions. Intensive therapy programs like addiction recovery, inpatient/outpatient treatment, the initial few therapy sessions may happen within a shorter interval, then it increases progressively as they stabilize
Longer intervals of therapy sessions
Toward the end of the 4th session, the client may request to extend the interval beyond 7 days, because they possibly feel stable enough and do not need constant support, but occasional check-ins keep progress on track. The last stage of therapy focuses on maintenance and relapse prevention, and the therapist would support the client to transfer more of the acquired skills to their normal life. Other reasons behind this phenomenon in therapy include the fact that the client could be feeling stable and doing well while using coping strategies independently.
We appreciate the growth and progress, and to avoid hindering the process of becoming, we allow the client, however, cognizant that it can be used as an escapism to avoid therapy. Therapy sessions that require practical skills training, career counselling, and mentorship are ongoing and require the client to show up for therapy once in a while. Other practical issues like finances, availability, or distance make weekly sessions hard.
