The founder of Share with a Counsellor has 17 years’ experience in the field of Mental Health Psychosocial Services (MHPSS), offering services to multicultural clients. She appreciates the place of technology in mental health, just like other sectors of health have integrated virtual interaction in service provision. Mental health was left behind until COVID-19 forced a social distancing dynamic on our social interactive interventions, yet triggering more stress to people.
The government set up Call Centers for people to seek guidance and counselling, more toll-free numbers were availed to the public to seek information, brief counselling and guidance on issues interfering with normal functioning. This comes on the backdrop of the Taskforce on Mental Health inaugurated on 11th December 2019, and submitting their final findings on 7th July 2020 to the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Health. One of the recommendations in the report is, “to have mental illness declared a National Emergency of epidemic proportions, to prioritize mental health as a priority public health and socioeconomic agenda”.
The current scenario in Kenya and many other countries is that counselling services are very far from the people, although government buy-in has increased awareness on mental health, that does not remove some of the existing barriers prohibiting the general public from seeking mental health services. These services need to be brought very close to every person, whether at the rural places or at urban centers. The costs of seeking counseling services are not cheap for every Kenyan to afford. Therefore, these services need to be made affordable to the lowest person and accessible to everyone everywhere.
Share with a Counsellor seek to support the promotion of the mental health service uptake; it indicates that “Good mental health of individuals, families, the communities, and society contribute enormously towards investment and development of social capital, which is the most important determinant of our health. Mental health promotion should be availed to individuals, families and communities, and society,(Mental Health Policy Document 2015-2030).
